ACPS & Alexandria City Council Team Up to Address School Overcrowding and Aging Infrastructure
Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and the city council are collaborating to address overcrowding and aging infrastructure in the school system. Middle schools are currently operating beyond their capacity, and some elementary buildings are nearing 90 years old. A comprehensive plan is underway to tackle these issues over the next decade and a half.
The city's planning department has proposed an updated long-term plan for school buildings, aiming to improve cooperation between urban planning and school planning for the next 10 to 15 years. This process will integrate city and school planning more closely than in the past, ensuring that future school construction and renovation decisions align with the city's overall development.
In October, ACPS will present information about middle school capacity and land acquisition options to the School Board. Creative solutions, such as co-locating different school levels on the same property, are being considered to maximize space and efficiency. However, redistricting alone cannot solve the overcrowding and infrastructure decay issues, as recommended in the 2015 plan. The unfulfilled recommendation to build a new middle school remains a challenge.
Officials will consider changed demographics, enrollment projections, and fiscal realities following the COVID-19 pandemic in the planning process. The updated plan will guide school construction and renovation decisions, ensuring that Alexandria's schools meet the needs of its students for the next 10 to 15 years. This process will require significant community engagement and could take several years to complete.
