Aschaffenburg Receives "BNE Model Municipality" Certificate
The city of Aschaffenburg, located in Germany, has been recognised as a "BNE Model Municipality" by BiNaKom. This honour was bestowed upon the city in recognition of its successful collaboration and achievements during the project period, which spanned from 2021 to 2025.
Mayor Jürgen Herzing, who held the position during the certification, emphasised the value of the cooperation in connecting sustainability and education. The city, along with various local actors, implemented numerous projects and measures to promote education for sustainable development (BNE) throughout this period.
The BNE Model Municipality project, run by BiNaKom, serves as a framework for collaborative work within the city of Aschaffenburg. Aschaffenburg was part of the nationwide network of BNE Model Municipalities during this time.
The certificate presented honours the successful conclusion of the collaboration and the achievements made during the project period. It also recognises the city's exemplary commitment to BNE and the implementation of the global sustainability goals of Agenda 2030.
Even after the project period, Aschaffenburg remains committed to further anchoring education for sustainable development in the city. The city's work in this area continues beyond the project period.
In June 2024, the Open Days Barcamp was held, bringing together the BNE network Aschaffenburg, actors from education, politics, and civil society.

It is worth noting that the Volkshochschule Aschaffenburg and the Verein Migranten für Migranten e.V. were also honoured with the "National Award - Education for Sustainable Development" by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German UNESCO Commission.
However, the BNE Model Municipality project is no longer active, as the cooperation agreement between the city of Aschaffenburg and BiNaKom has now expired. Despite this, the city's commitment to education for sustainable development continues.
