Annual competition for gifted high school mathematicians in the United Kingdom
A group of 22 students from an unnamed school have recently been awarded certificates of participation for their exceptional performance in the UK Maths Trust Senior Maths Challenge. This prestigious competition, aimed at secondary school students aged 13-19, is designed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision, and fluency.
The competition, which took place on 1st October, saw students tackle a series of challenging multiple-choice problems. The scores earned by the participants determined the awards they received. Gold, Silver, and Bronze certificates were handed out to recognise different levels of achievement, with the awards reflecting the highest percentages of students (approximately top 40%) who participate in the challenge.
Seven students managed to secure Gold awards, including Lucy Micallef, Logan Hart, Betting Cahilig, Will Hall, Elijah Luehrmann, Roderick Rankin-Skelly, and Oliver Basu. Bettina Cahilig, in particular, achieved the best score in the upper sixth with 89, a remarkable feat that also makes her the highest scorer among the school's participants in this year's competition.
However, the spotlight was truly stolen by Lucy Micallef (L6), who secured the highest score in the UK Maths Trust Senior Maths Challenge across the school with a remarkable 96. This impressive achievement underscores the school's pride in their students' mathematical prowess.
The UK Maths Trust, an organisation established to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics, organises and runs maths competitions like the Senior Maths Challenge. These competitions are part of a broader suite of activities that include team events and follow-on rounds at higher difficulty levels. The Senior Maths Challenge is often the first stage for students qualifying for further UKMT competitions like the British Mathematical Olympiad.
In total, 34 students achieved a Bronze award, and 19 students received a Silver award in the UK Maths Trust Senior Maths Challenge. The competition is a testament to the students' problem-solving ability and encourages mathematical exploration beyond the standard curriculum.
