Unleashing Creativity: The Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) Arrives in Mumbai
In a groundbreaking move, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting unveiled the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) at the WAVES 2025 Summit. This innovative institution is slated to become a national hub for the animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and extended reality (AVGC-XR) sector.
The IICT has already begun its journey and has forged strategic alliances with tech and media titans for collaborative projects. Joining forces are NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Star India, and Adobe, as per the official announcement.
Driven by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the IICT is being established in collaboration with FICCI and CII, modeled after prestigious institutions like IIT and IIM. The institute's mission is to fuel talent development, accelerate innovation, and set global standards in the AVGC-XR space.
Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed excitement about the project, stating, "IICT will drive the global expansion of the entertainment industry. prime minister Modi ji has allocated Rs 400 crore for IICT, and the Government of Maharashtra has provided the land. Renowned global tech giants such as NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Star India, Meta, and Adobe are collaborating to make IICT a world-class institution."
The initial phase of IICT is based at the NFDC Building, Pedder Road, Mumbai, and boasts top-notch facilities such as Gaming Labs, Animation Labs, Edit and Sound Suites, Virtual Production Setups, Immersive Studios, a Preview Theatre, and multiple smart classrooms. Future plans include the development of a separate 10-acre campus at Film City, Goregaon, to extend the institute's capabilities and reach.
Adobe has taken an active interest in the IICT, offering free access to Adobe Creative Cloud for students, developing the curriculum, and providing mentorship programs. With a focus on training, incubation, innovation, R&D, and policy development, IICT aims to create a plethora of opportunities for young creators, technologists, and entrepreneurs in India.
This ambitious endeavor signifies the government's firm resolve to bolster India's soft power and creative economy on the global stage.
