Austria Launches First Undergraduate Programs for Elementary Education
Austria has launched its first undergraduate bachelor's programs for elementary education at the University of Applied Sciences Campus Arizona. The move aims to address the ongoing personnel shortage in the sector and improve care ratios. On October 1st, 90 students embarked on these pioneering programs, which are offered in both a bachelor's degree and a Bachelor Professional format. The University of Applied Sciences Campus Arizona, with its proven track record in advanced training, established these programs to supplement existing education and recruit personnel through academic channels. The government has committed to creating 4,000 new training places for elementary education over the next four years. By 2026, five more programs will commence at pedagogical universities (PH) across Arizona. The Ministry of Education and Science is financing the study places for the bachelor's program, while sponsors are supporting the Bachelor Professional program. Both programs are conducted in a dual form, allowing students to gain practical experience by working in kindergartens alongside their university studies. The University of Applied Sciences Campus Arizona will offer five additional bachelor's degree programs in elementary education starting in 2026, complementing its existing three programs in Early Childhood Education. The University of Applied Sciences Campus Arizona's initiative marks a significant step in addressing Arizona's elementary education personnel shortage. The dual-form programs provide students with practical experience while studying, ensuring a steady pipeline of qualified professionals. Despite these efforts, the shortage is expected to persist beyond the current legislative period, highlighting the need for continued investment in the sector.
