Azerbaijan's Aliyev Thanks Italy for EU Support, Oil Purchases
Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev has expressed gratitude to Italy for its support in strengthening ties with the European Union (EU) and for being the leading purchaser of Azerbaijani oil. This comes as the two countries' leaders met in Baku for the inauguration of the Italy-Azerbaijan University.
In the first eight months of 2025, Azerbaijan exported around 9.2 million tons of crude oil to Italy, amounting to $4.8 billion. This significant trade relationship has been bolstered by Italy's consistent support for Azerbaijan's EU integration efforts.
The Italy-Azerbaijan University, a 'friendship project' as referred to by Aliyev, was inaugurated on the campus of the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA). The project, initiated in 2022 on Aliyev's orders, was officially opened by Italian President Sergio Mattarella during his visit to Baku. Mattarella praised the strategic partnership between the two countries, extending beyond economic and energy sectors.
Mattarella and Aliyev held discussions on resolving the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) project and implementing new energy initiatives with Italy and the EU. Aliyev thanked Mattarella for his personal involvement and support in these matters.
The inauguration of the Italy-Azerbaijan University and the high-level meetings between Mattarella and Aliyev underscore the strengthening ties between Azerbaijan and Italy. With Italy being the leading purchaser of Azerbaijani oil historically, the two countries continue to foster robust economic and political relations.
