Bakken Oil Boom Drives Student Surge, Raising Educational Concerns

A surge in student migration to the North Face of North Dakota's Bakken region, driven by the oil boom, has raised concerns about classroom stability and educational outcomes. The rapid influx of students, particularly in elementary schools, has left administrators and teachers grappling with disruption and fatigue.

Data from 1993 to 2015 reveals a stark contrast between the North Face of North Dakota and the rest of the state. While the state's enrollment remained steady, the North Face region saw a sharp increase post-2009. This growth was most pronounced in elementary schools, with kindergarten seeing the highest rise. Some students moved in and out throughout the year, adding to the challenge.

Administrators in the region, including those from Williston, Watford City, and Stanley districts, reported that elementary schools bore the brunt of these changes. Teachers echoed these concerns. Despite these challenges, high school dropout rates did not significantly increase during the shale boom. Further analysis is underway to understand the impact of oil development on student achievement.
