Bear Creek School Boosts Literacy with Enhanced Libraries
The Bear Creek School, known for its classical liberal arts approach, is bucking the trend of declining school libraries. Despite over 12 percent of public schools losing their libraries, this school has not only maintained but enhanced its literacy resources.
The school boasts dedicated libraries for each level, from preschool to high school, totaling four vibrant centers for literacy. Recently, two of these libraries were remodeled to create inviting, adaptable spaces for various events like poetry slams and reading challenges. These events, along with lunchtime library clubs and the Battle of the Books, encourage students to engage with literature.
Tressa Parker, Dean of Literacy and Innovation, leads the school's commitment to literacy. Despite a national decline in school librarians, Bear Creek has embraced technology to enhance its libraries. Forward-facing displays and interactive kiosks make checking out books engaging, while Literacy and Innovation Leads connect teachers with innovative tools. The school's support from the William T. Grant Foundation has been instrumental in maintaining this commitment.
In an era where many schools are losing their libraries, The Bear Creek School stands out as a beacon of literacy. Its well-resourced libraries and innovative approach to encouraging reading have led to consistently better academic performance among its students.
