Bird Drop-In at Ingolstadt Montessori School
Updated Press Release
Last week, the charming duo of urban avians, Specter and Fly, accompanied the charismatic leads of the non-profit animal foundation, "City Pigeons and Other Hip Fowl"—Maximilian Resch and Michaela Reil—on a captivating visit to the "Pluto" learning group at Ingolstadt's Montessori School.
The diligent teachers, Judith Titze and Lilia Knoll, extended the invitation, and the passionate quartet heartily accepted, engaging the curious minds of 22 cherubic students, age 7 to 11.
As the eager young minds beheld the charismatic city pigeons up close, they seized the opportunity to ask thought-provoking questions about these often misunderstood creatures. The children also dismantled some popular misconceptions: city pigeons aren't disease-spreading machines like fashion magazines would have you believe; they're just as clean as Fido and Fluffy. In fact, studies show that these feathered friends are actually quite intelligent, capable of learning complex skills and recognizing works of art!
Unlike their aquatic cousins, ducks, who trade partners like playing cards, city pigeons stick together for life and boast an impressive internal GPS system—one that helps them find their way home from a thousand kilometers away. Because of this remarkable ability, the Swiss military still maintains a small flock of carrier pigeons to communicate during emergencies when electronic systems go dark. Despite popular misconception, these urban commuters didn't just hop off the street; they're descendants of the rock pigeon, domesticated by our ancestors and later embraced as urban dwellers.
In the heart of Ingolstadt, our fowl friends often suffer as chicks due to a poor food supply or due to injuries or illnesses suffered by their parents. The mission of the City Pigeons and Other Hip Fowl association, among others, is to swap actual pigeon eggs for dummy ones in public spaces, keeping their breeding instincts satisfied. This activity supports the city's existing set-up of three city pigeon coops, offering food, water, and nesting sites for the local pigeon population. By regularly exchanging eggs, the association strives to manage the population in a humane and effective manner.
Both city pigeon aficionados and those who view them with distaste can appreciate the association's efforts. The student's cunning triumph in the egg-spotting challenge proved that much!
