Central government staff members to receive amplified transport allowances – Financial Ministry issues edict

The Central Government has issued a new order, directing all ministries and departments to implement the doubled Transport Allowance for certain categories of disabled employees. This decision is based on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and falls under the 7th Pay Commission framework.

The eligible categories for this increased allowance include locomotor disability, blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing impairment, speech and language impairment, intellectual disability, mental illness, chronic neurological conditions, blood-related disabilities, and multiple disabilities.

This revised list supersedes earlier instructions and all related ministries and departments have been directed to implement the doubled transport allowance strictly for these categories. The Finance Ministry has clarified these new instructions in an office memorandum.

Previously, there were some additional allowances for disabled employees, but now a clear and updated instruction of double transport allowance has come for them. The transport allowance for eligible employees will be twice the normal rate.

Under the 7th Pay Commission, multiple types of allowances are given to central government employees. Other allowances include Dearness Allowance (DA), Travel Allowance, Children Education Allowance, and Hostel Subsidy.

This step by the government is expected to make the life of Divyang employees easier and strengthen the spirit of inclusiveness in other government policies. It is also anticipated that in the coming time, more such policies will come which will make the workplace more accessible and equal for all.

The Finance Ministry has also directed all central ministries and departments to implement the new instruction, ensuring that all departments can avail the benefits equally.
