Competitors Engage in Public Service Project Inspired by The Apprentice
Pediatric Residents at Golisano Children's Hospital Collaborate with Boys & Girls Club of Rochester
In a unique collaboration, pediatric residents at Golisano Children's Hospital, part of the University of Rochester Medical Center, are gaining hands-on experience in community outreach through the Pediatric Links with the Community (PLC) Program. This initiative aims to improve the health and well-being of children in the Rochester community.
On August 7, more than a dozen residents were given an Apprentice-style challenge to create a 30-second public service announcement (PSA) for the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester. The competition aimed to recruit more teenagers for the club and promote the annual garage sale. Both teams that created the PSAs won the competition and earned donations in their honor from the Boys & Girls Club.
The PLC Program is dedicated to service, child advocacy, and related evaluation. It provides residents with hands-on experience in collaborating with community agencies, and all pediatric residents participate in a two-week community-based rotation as part of their training. During this rotation, residents work with a variety of providers at more than 30 different community sites.
Dwayne Mahoney, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester, provided guidance for the PSA creation. Monroe County District Attorney Michael Green also helped to judge the friendly competition. Shawn Brown of the Boys & Girls Club and Michael Green praised the success of both PSAs.
The PLC Program is helping create a model of pediatrics in which pediatricians work with community-based organizations to assure the health of all children and advocate for their needs. This aligns with broader goals in community pediatrics, which involves integrating pediatric healthcare with community resources to support children’s overall wellbeing beyond the clinical setting.
While a direct source for PLC at Golisano Children’s Hospital was not found, these themes are consistent with programs across pediatric hospitals aimed at linking clinical care to community support systems.
