Free Waldorf School Weilheim Construction Halted Again, Contract Terminated
Following a resumption in October 2024, the construction of the Free Waldorf School Weilheim has once again come to a standstill. The termination of the previous construction company aims to facilitate a fresh start for the project.
The latest halt in construction has left the school community in a state of uncertainty, having hoped that the long-awaited move from the interim location in Huglfing might finally be approaching. Despite a visible construction restart, the site has remained inactive since the spring.
"A visible construction start gave everyone involved a much-needed boost," explains board member Christian Henckel. "It appeared as though there was only a standstill from the outside; a great deal of background work was actually being completed intensively."
The decision to terminate the contract with the previous construction company was taken in the interest of the project's continued success. The remaining work will be taken over by a new specialist company, with the goal of completing the project as swiftly as possible.
Technical or static problems were not the primary reasons for the delay this time, according to board members. They have conducted a thorough analysis, in collaboration with their advisors, and are now aware of the causes for the latest delay and have made the necessary decisions. Unfortunately, they cannot disclose further details publicly at this time.
In addition to organizational challenges, financing remains a sensitive issue. Last year, a cost increase of 20 percent was already reported, and this trend continues. Delays on the construction site are unfortunately always associated with cost increases, and this is also the case here. The school is currently awaiting a new offer for a partial trade before adjusting its financing.
Resumption of the construction work is yet uncertain, but a delay in the move is inevitable. Cooperation from all parties involved is crucial for the project to continue, and additional financial support would be welcome to keep the savings list as short as possible.
Life in Huglfing remains lively despite the challenges. With a growing student population, the teaching staff and student body demonstrate creativity and dedication. The school community eagerly anticipates the arrival of their new building, and despite some upper school classes being smaller than ideal currently, the situation remains stable. By the next school year, when they aim to reach 13 grade levels, the situation should not deteriorate further.
