Construction veterans Aboitiz and Tsuneishi commence construction on the engineering building of LCIC
The Lapu-Lapu Cebu International College (LCIC) is constructing a new Civil Engineering Building in Bankal, Lapu-Lapu City. This project, a collaboration among Aboitiz Construction, Tsuneishi Holdings (Cebu) Inc., and LCIC, is set to elevate engineering education in Cebu and ensure a steady supply of skilled professionals for the construction and shipbuilding industries.
The building, expected to be completed in 16 months, will serve as both an academic hub and a training ground. It will provide specialized education and hands-on training aligned with the design and engineering requirements of shipbuilding and civil engineering, enhancing industry readiness among graduates.
The project is significant as it expands the partnership between Aboitiz Construction and Tsuneishi, initially established in 1996 through Tsuneishi Heavy Industries Cebu Inc. (THICI) in Balamban. This partnership, historically supporting shipbuilding phases and generating an average of 1,500 jobs per year, primarily from local communities, is now being extended to the construction of the Civil Engineering Building.
Ramez Sidhom, chief operating officer of Aboitiz Construction, stated that the project is a symbol of quality and innovation. Tsuneishi Holdings (Cebu) Inc. president Yasuaki Seto believes the facility will nurture future engineers aligned with the design and engineering needs of the shipbuilding industry. LCIC president professor Grace Gorospe-Jamon views the new facility as a result of collaboration, stating that everyone plays a role in its realization.
The new building is designed to equip future engineers with both technical knowledge and practical skills. It includes civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection works. The project is expected to create nearly 200 jobs, with 90% of manpower sourced locally, which will also stimulate the local economy.
The collaboration between the three entities is reinforcing a decades-long partnership. The Civil Engineering Building is part of an initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of engineers for the shipbuilding industry. It is expected to contribute to the growth of construction and shipbuilding industries in the region.
