Detroit Country Day School unveils virtual production studio, backed by Tessera technology.

Detroit Country Day School's xR Studio, part of a larger complex that includes a vodcasting studio and VR lab, has undergone a significant transformation thanks to Brompton Technology. Will Jennings, senior project manager, led the design and installation of the system on behalf of 4Wall.

Brompton Technology provided comprehensive support for the installation, including on-site calibration and training. The school chose Brompton as their LED solution provider due to its popularity in major concerts and video production studios.

The studio is equipped with an LED floor, which is being considered for addition within the next year. The facility features a 26x8-foot INFiLED DBmk2 1.9mm pixel pitch LED volume. The technical infrastructure includes a RED camera with Mo-Sys tracking system and Disguise media servers.

The studio's centerpiece is the Brompton Tessera LED processing platform, praised for its versatility and advanced feature set. The system runs at a 4K resolution (3840x2160), delivering sharp, detailed imagery essential for immersive virtual production environments.

One of the key benefits of using Brompton Technology is the advanced color shaping and fine-tuning capabilities. The Brompton Tessera platform allows fine adjustments of color saturation and gamma via software curves to match in-camera lighting accurately. This ensures seamless integration between virtual backgrounds on LED volumes and physical elements on set, enhancing realism in in-camera visual effects (ICVFX).

The Brompton Tessera software also allows adjusting the nits in the software, which is beneficial for matching analog and digital colors. The OSCA (On-Screen Color Adjustment) feature in the Brompton Tessera software is useful for real-time editing.

The installation represents a forward-thinking application of Brompton's technology that bridges the gap between classroom learning and industry-standard technology. By integrating Brompton’s LED processing platform, the school creates a state-of-the-art studio that enables students to engage with tools comparable to industry standards, enriching liberal arts education with experiential learning in virtual production.

In a recent project, an 11th-grade student created a documentary about the Detroit riots of the late 1960s using the studio's virtual production capabilities. The school is committed to continuing its support of educational initiatives that use professional-grade virtual production tools.

Webster Moyle, technical sales manager at Brompton, is proud of the technology's role in enabling the next generation of visual storytellers at Detroit Country Day School. The school's use of the Brompton Tessera system represents a significant advancement in PreK-12 educational technology.

  1. The Brompton Tessera LED processing platform, a key feature of Detroit Country Day School's xR Studio, provides a bridge between classroom learning and industry-standard technology, enriching education and self-development through online education and learning.
  2. The transformation of the xR Studio, housing data-and-cloud-computing equipment such as RED cameras, Mo-Sys tracking systems, and Disguise media servers, was made possible by the partnership with Brompton Technology, expanding the school's capabilities in education-and-self-development and online-education.
  3. The system's advanced technology, including the Brompton Tessera platform's color shaping and fine-tuning capabilities, technology, and versatile feature set, is not only beneficial for major concerts and video production studios, but also plays a crucial role in the school's commitment to incorporating professional-grade virtual production tools in educational initiatives.
