Discussion on International Privacy Laws Held at Japan Privacy Symposium's Second Edition

The Foundation for Policy Innovation (FPF) recently hosted the Second Annual Japan Privacy Symposium, an event that brought together privacy leaders, regulators, and policymakers from Japan and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. The symposium, held at the Ritz-Carlton in Tokyo, Japan, was a collaborative effort between FPF, the Personal Information Protection Commission of Japan (PPC), the Japan DPO Association, and S&K Brussels LPC.

The focus of the symposium was on regulatory priorities and privacy trends in the APAC region. The event highlighted evolving data protection laws, compliance challenges, and new frameworks addressing privacy and AI governance in Japan and the broader APAC region.

Keynote speeches and discussions covered emerging regulatory priorities in Japan's privacy landscape as shaped by the PPC, updates to Japan’s data protection laws, and cross-border data transfer requirements. The symposium also addressed the broader trend towards harmonizing data protection regulations with international norms, notably influenced by global frameworks like the GDPR and AI governance initiatives across countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

The role of Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and compliance challenges for organizations operating across multiple APAC jurisdictions was also a key topic. Additionally, the intersection of privacy and emerging technologies, particularly AI ethics and governance frameworks being developed regionwide, was discussed.

FPF, a global non-profit organization dedicated to advancing policy solutions that promote data protection, privacy, and responsible innovation, collaborates closely with regulatory bodies, industry stakeholders, and expert groups globally, including in Japan, to develop pragmatic frameworks that encourage privacy-conscious data use and support emerging technologies. Their partnership with Japan’s PPC and other organizations for this symposium underscores FPF’s commitment to fostering regional dialogue and practical guidance in data privacy and AI governance.

Commissioner OHSHIMA Shuhei opened the event with a keynote speech. The symposium provided a valuable forum for commissioners from around the globe to share their perspectives with privacy leaders and community members.

Gabriela Zanfir-Fortuna, FPF’s Vice President for Global Privacy, expressed excitement about the successful second edition of the symposium. FPF can be followed on X and LinkedIn, and for any questions, contact media@our website.
