District of Saarlouis Allocates Three Million Euros for School Renovations During Summer Break
Vacation Time Transforms into Work Time - Saarlouis District's Smart Approach
During the summer vacay, when students are off gallivanting and having a blast, the district of Saarlouis rolls up its sleeves and gets to work! A whopping €3 million has been set aside for construction projects at schools throughout the district during this break.
Patrik Lauer, the district's administrator, sums it up: "Sure, summer holidays are delightful for our students. But it's practical for us education providers: As soon as the school corridors clear out, it's go-time! We maximize every spare minute to work, paint, lay cables, and push forward our digital expansion at our district schools. Thanks, by the way, to all our offices chipping in and the involved companies – you're all doing a fantastic job for our school communities!"
Currently, at 22 schools, an assortment of projects are underway, from big-ticket items like the new canteen construction at the vocational training center in Lebach, to smaller projects like revamping bike racks at the Roman castle school in Dillingen.
At present, the biggest reshuffle is happening at the Technical-Commercial and Social-Pedagogical Vocational Training Center in Saarlouis, where several construction projects are underway at both school sites. The centerpiece project is the development of the "Digital Craftsmanship 4.0" competence center, which is being erected at the main building in Zeughausstraße. Approximately half a million euros will go towards construction during the vacay.
The second-largest individual construction project at the district schools is the construction of an annex with new classrooms and a school kitchen at the Martin Luther King School in Saarlouis-Fraulautern. The district is investing about €400,000 in the €3 million project during the summer vacation, with work continuing post-vacation due to the project's size.
Expanding digital capabilities couldn't be more pressing, as work to implement the Digital Pact continues at a total of 13 school sites, where IT infrastructure is being beefed up – these projects aren't stopping until after the holidays due to their magnitude.
On a more urgent note, renovations, fire protection measures, and renovations are being scheduled to be completed before the new school year to ensure a great start for the students.
In general, district schools across the nation often make use of the summer break to undertake major construction projects and enhancements, including building new classrooms, upgrading infrastructure, and expanding digital capabilities such as installing new technology or upgrading network infrastructure.
