In a significant stride towards sustainable mobility and climate neutrality, Europe's most powerful hydrogen refuelling station has been inaugurated on Höherweg in Düsseldorf, Germany. The key organisations responsible for this landmark project are H2 MOBILITY, Rheinbahn, and Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, with HOYER supporting logistics.

The station, capable of daily hydrogen production of up to five tonnes and simultaneous refuelling of three vehicles, caters to buses, trucks, passenger cars, and light commercial vehicles. It is strategically located near the Rheinbahn operations yard in Lierenfeld, making it practical for everyday use.

H2 MOBILITY, the leading company for the construction and operation of hydrogen refuelling stations in Germany, has built and operates the station. Rheinbahn, the local public transport provider, has already integrated fuel cell buses in its fleet, and the new station will further support the expansion of hydrogen-powered mobility in Düsseldorf and the region.

Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, the city's utility company, is responsible for the hydrogen production, which will be sourced from plant, animal, or microbial waste from Düsseldorf's garbage. The production process is supported by an electrolyzer built next to the filling station, funded in part by a grant of 1.212,000 euros from the federal government.

The federal government has also contributed a total of 3.137,000 euros for the construction of the hydrogen refuelling station on the Höherweg. This investment aligns with Germany's National Innovation Programme and the federal government's goal of being climate-neutral by the year 2045.

Düsseldorf, aiming for climate neutrality by the year 2035, welcomes this new station as a significant step towards decarbonizing its mobility sector. The use of hydrogen-powered buses in the Rheinbahn fleet, as well as the expansion of the corresponding infrastructure, is a win for climate protection and modern mobility in Düsseldorf.

By consistently strengthening public transport, Düsseldorf offers increasingly better alternatives to motorized individual traffic. The opening of Europe's most powerful hydrogen refuelling station is a testament to the city's commitment to sustainable mobility and a greener future.
