Education Professionals Who Molded Our Minds and Lives

Honoring Exceptional Educators During Teacher Appreciation Week

As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, which runs from May 5th to May 9th, Harris County Public Library extends its gratitude to all teachers. In celebrating them, we recall the educators who have made a significant impact on our lives.

A Tough Gym Teacher with a Golden Heart

Fifty years ago, a fourth-grade gym teacher, Ms. Gilreath, first used the phrase "heavenly day." Her firm yet caring nature left an indelible impression on her student, Cindy G., who recalls her as a tough gym teacher with a heart of gold. Ms. Gilreath's patience and care remained evident even as Cindy continued to forget her gym shorts, an oversight that did not go unnoticed by the teacher. After Ms. Gilreath's passing in 2013, Cindy reflects fondly on the caring educator who showed compassion beyond the gym.

Care, Devotion, and Support

For six years, from 6th grade to 9th grade, Daniela G.'s math teacher, Ms. Channon, played a pivotal role in her life. Ms. Channon, with her passionate teaching style, made math accessible and instilled in her students the importance of personal character. With fondness and gratitude, Daniela looks back on the enduring impact her math teacher has had on her life.

Practical Wisdom and More

In the third grade, Mrs. Hartley imparted both practical and powerful lessons to her student, davec. The tactical tips on counting calendar days and managing social interactions resonated with him, whereas the life lessons - such as acknowledging those who "just know things" and the importance of teaching as a way of being - stayed with him for a lifetime. Mrs. Hartley's influence lives on in the wisdom he shares with others today.

A Welcoming Space and Unwavering Support

For Natalie B., high school was a tumultuous time, but her 10th-grade English teacher, Ms. Vidal, provided a welcoming space in the midst of change. Ms. Vidal always took the time to chat with Natalie about her well-being, encouraging her reading and writing skills, and never judging her behavior. Through Ms. Vidal's kindness, Natalie found the strength to work with teenagers in Harris County's Juvenile Probation Department, paying tribute to the role models who have shaped her life.

A Wake-up Call and Respect for the Professoriate

Mr. Danielson - a seemingly gruff disciplinarian with a hidden heart of gold - became a turning point in Nyla Vela's life. The teacher's forthright conversations and realistic approach helped her navigate her ambitions, eventually leading to a career in advocacy work. In a touching tribute, Nyla acknowledges her teacher's impact and expresses regret for not recognizing it sooner.

A Lifelong Love for Music in the Second Ward

In the 1970s, being proud of one's roots in the Second Ward was not common. However, Rozette P.'s music teacher, Ms. Lynn, saw the potential in her students and taught them to value their heritage through a bilingual musical about the Second Ward. The South Central Houston native recalls the impact Ms. Lynn's teachings still hold, even forty years later.

Recognizing Anger and Encouraging Self-Expression

Sarai A.'s high school years would have been much harder without her advanced painting teacher, Mr. Raygoza. The teacher's unwavering belief in her potential helped her find her voice and express herself creatively. Through his patience, guidance, and openness to new ideas, Mr. Raygoza played an essential role in shaping Sarai's future as an artist.

In acknowledging the selfless work of teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, we recognize the profound impact these dedicated professionals have had on shaping lives, fostering growth, and building stronger communities. Their tireless dedication and unwavering commitment to their students contribute to nurturing the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and creators.
