Educational Facilities Face Surge in Cyberattacks
Educational facilities worldwide face a growing threat from cybercriminals, with attacks surging by 41% year-on-year. The sector is now the most targeted globally, averaging a staggering 4,356 attacks per organization each week.
The reliance of educational institutions on online platforms, coupled with limited cybersecurity budgets, makes them attractive targets. This vulnerability is exacerbated by a widespread lack of awareness among staff. Only 2% of bosses can identify all signs of a phishing attack, leaving institutions exposed.
The situation is particularly dire in the US, which saw a 67% year-on-year increase in cyberattacks, the steepest rise globally. APAC is the hardest hit region, averaging 7,869 attacks per organization per week. Other sectors also face significant threats, with telecommunications and healthcare experiencing 2,636 and 2,468 attacks per organization per week respectively. Government is the second most attacked industry, with an average of 2,716 attacks per organization per week.
The escalating cyber threat to educational facilities underscores the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and increased awareness. With attacks showing no signs of abating, institutions must prioritise bolstering their defences to protect sensitive data and ensure business continuity.
