The province of New Brunswick recently published the results of its 2024/25 provincial exams in Literature, Mathematics, and Science. These assessments, conducted across the anglophone and francophone education sectors, were shared on Thursday by Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Claire Johnson.

In the anglophone sector, scientific literacy showed continued improvement. Specifically, there were improvements in Grade 4 and Grade 6 English-language assessments. Additionally, improvements in English reading and scientific literacy were observed in Grade 10. Furthermore, improvements in the reading and writing skills test were noted in Grade 10, as well as improvements in the numeracy skills test.

However, there were some areas that require attention. A slight decline in math and French reading was observed in the anglophone sector. Notably, French reading in Grade 5 and French-language reading and writing in Grade 7 showed a decline.

Minister Johnson emphasized that while there are areas for improvement, the accomplishments in the education sector are worth celebrating. She stated that the new assessment methodology, which allows for cohort tracking and deeper analyses of factors associated with academic achievement, means that assessment results are available to teachers about their students, instead of just at the school, district, or provincial level.

Sharing the results ensures transparency and highlights areas for improvement, according to Johnson. She also mentioned that the assessments help understand how the education system is working. The news release from the province mentioned that New Brunswick conducts assessments in literacy, numeracy, and science annually.

In the francophone sector, specific results were not provided in this paragraph. However, it was noted that the francophone sector conducts assessments for Grades 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, as well as an oral proficiency assessment in Grade 12.

Overall, the 2024/25 provincial assessments provide valuable insights into the state of education in New Brunswick. The findings will undoubtedly inform future efforts to improve academic outcomes and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
