Event: Orientation Day (2017 Edition)
Dr. Shashi Tharoor Graces Orientation Day for Third Batch of Design Students in India
On the 24th of July, 2017, the India International Centre, New Delhi, played host to an enlightening Orientation Day for the third group of design students in India at an esteemed institution. The Chief Guest for the event was Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament, who delivered a thought-provoking speech on the importance of design in shaping India's future.
Dr. Tharoor emphasized the need for India to focus more on upskilling its workforce, particularly in the field of design, as it plays a crucial role in India's economic development. He pointed out that according to the World Intellectual Property Organisation, India is lagging behind several countries, including emerging economies in Asia, in the field of design and innovation. He encouraged India to take active steps to streamline the education structure and initiate more focused courses across industrial segments in India.
Professor Usha Nehru Patel, the Dean, delivered an inspirational speech, emphasizing Design as an integral element of India's existence. She discussed the power of Design to bring about immense change in India and its role in boosting the Indian Industry. Professor Nehru Patel also elaborated on the role of educators and the responsibilities of sincere learners in India.
The new batch of students were introduced to the Faculty and Staff of the institution. Ms. Simrat Joshi, the Head of Administration, took the students through the highlights of the Course Book and gave them a brief overview of the year ahead and what it would entail in India.
Dr. Jitin Chadha, the Founder Director of the institution, addressed the students and their parents, emphasizing the institution's commitment to producing ethical, reflective, and entrepreneurial designers in India. He also highlighted the significance of design in India's soft power strategy.
Professor Nehru Patel concluded the event by emphasizing the importance of design education in shaping perceptions and interactions with products in India. She emphasized that design plays a crucial role in India's economic development and boosting the Indian Industry, with its ubiquitous presence in everyday life in India.
