News Article: University of Bremen Showcases Innovative Research at Research Mile

The University of Bremen (HSB) is set to participate in the Research Mile event, taking place on September 21st and 22nd at Bremen's Weserpromenade. This exciting event promises a blend of scientific presentations, interactive student-led exhibitions, digital experiences, and cultural activities, all centred around maritime and environmental research themes.

Visitors can expect a variety of key activities and exhibits. The University of Bremen will present marine and environmental sciences, with a focus on the Bremen Core Repository and MARUM centre. These presentations will highlight ongoing research such as the IODP³ expedition involving international scientists analysing seafloor and freshwater sediments.

The Blue Science research cluster and the University’s marine sciences departments will also be present, offering oceanographic and climate-related research projects. Interactive displays and demonstrations will be available, including 3D scanning and printing by DSM digitization staff, offering an inside look at how museum objects are digitized and reproduced.

Hands-on activities and digital exhibits on the Science Mile will include VR experiences related to maritime and space research, digital museum offerings like stop-motion and “harbor heroes,” as well as maritime safety and navigation using satellite data.

Research centres such as DLR will also be participating, presenting maritime research topics focused on automation, digitalization, and decarbonization of shipping. Highlights include autonomous shipping, port safety sensors, and virtual space flights.

Cultural and student engagement elements like poetry slams and live performances, such as a shanty choir aboard ships, will accompany the scientific exhibits to enrich the event atmosphere.

Innovative student projects will also be showcased. For example, the International Study Program Environment Technology at HSB will present a hydrogen-powered bicycle cargo trailer. This project, a result of student effort, splits water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis using an electrolyzer.

The "Shipbuilding and Maritime Technology" study program at HSB will introduce itself during the Research Mile, with various shipbuilding projects on display, including the self-built rowing boats by students.

Visitors can also stop by the HSB pavilion at the Schlachte during the Research Mile, where the underwater world of the Weser will be showcased by students and lecturers of the International Study Program "Technical and Applied Biology" (ISTAB). The pavilion will feature local fish species such as pike, perch, and eel in aquariums.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Klefoth mentions that the display at the Research Mile aims to raise awareness about invasive fish species, using the black goby as an example. Originally from the Black, Caspian, and Azov seas, the black goby is increasingly found in the North and Baltic seas and can spread to new regions as a stowaway in ship ballast water or on ship hulls. Posters at the Research Mile will provide explanations on the displayed species.

The Research Mile is just one part of the Maritime Week at Bremen's Weserpromenade, which started last weekend, September 14th. With its diverse range of activities and exhibits, the Research Mile promises to be an engaging and educational event for all.
