Harvard's International Student Enrollment Temporarily Protected from Trump Administration's Block

In a recent development, a U.S. federal judge has prolonged an order preventing the U.S. government from restricting Harvard University from accepting international students holding visas. Judge Allison D. Burroughs issued this ruling following a hearing, maintaining the status quo while the case is under investigation.

The Trump administration had initially given Harvard a 30-day period to demonstrate its compliance with all relevant legal requirements after threatening to revoke the university's ability to enroll foreign students. This move was part of the ongoing dispute regarding Harvard's compliance with a request for records related to international students.

Harvard has been permitted to continue enrolling international students, as per Judge Burroughs' ruling. Nevertheless, this decision is not yet final.

The Trump administration justifies its actions based on concerns over pro-Palestinian protests on U.S. campuses. They accuse universities like Harvard of not addressing these protests adequately and tolerating anti-Semitic incidents on campus.

International students account for 27% of Harvard's student body, with a significant number coming from Asia. The university celebrated its 2021 graduation ceremonies amidst this conflict, with president Alan Garber emphasizing the importance of international graduates during his speech.

Harvard continues to battle with the Trump administration over this matter. The administration has stated it may take further action against the university if it feels Harvard is failing to meet its legal obligations.
