Kicking Off the "Reallabor ZEKIWA Zeitz": A Groundbreaking Sustainable Revitalization Project
Millions allocated for rejuvenating the long-dormant Zekiwa property - Funds earmarked for redevelopment of the former Zekiwa area
Get ready to revolutionize, Zeitz! The dusty, forgotten site of the old ZEKIWA baby carriage factory is about to undergo a stunning transformation. The state initiative "Saxony-Anhalt - Together for a New European Bauhaus (NEB)" has allocated around 15.5 million euros for this epic makeover, as announced by the NEB Network Office Saxony-Anhalt.
But this isn't just any redevelopment project. It's a real-life lab - a testing ground and research hub where innovation meets aesthetics. This multidisciplinary consortium, made up of the city of Zeitz, Anhalt University, Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Burg Giebichenstein Art University Halle, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and Forum Rathenau, has its sights set on sustainable, circular, and climate-neutral construction. They aim to push the boundaries of design, showcasing artistic possibilities alongside cutting-edge research and development.
This project, dubbed the "Reallabor ZEKIWA Zeitz," is the largest NEB project in Saxony-Anhalt and the only real laboratory. The revitalization project, set to be completed by the end of 2027, will focus on the former administration building, the wasteland, as well as the use of the ground floor in the main building of the once Europe-wide operating Zeitz pram factory.
Located in the heart of Zeitz, in the Burgenland district, the former production site has been abandoned since the early 1990s. The once-proud GmbH, still headquartered in Kretzschau (Burgenland district), relocated its manufacturing to the Far East long ago.
Ready to share your two cents? under the slogan "New European Bauhaus," the European Union is urging society to brainstorm ideas for our future coexistence. Several projects in the state are being backed with EU funds from the "Just Transition Fund" for the Central German region. The state is utilizing these funds to cook up concrete projects in the Saxony-Anhalt brown coal region.
The funding pot for the Just Transition Fund for the Saxony-Anhalt NEB initiative is brimming with 44 million euros. The state initiative officially launched in August 2023, with eligible projects hailing from Anhalt-Bitterfeld, Mansfeld-South Harz, Saalekreis, Burgenlandkreis, and the city of Halle.
