Global Self-Esteem Crisis: Nearly Half Struggle, Gen Z Hardest Hit

A global survey reveals a self-esteem crisis, with nearly half of the world's population struggling with low self-esteem. The Body Shop's Global Self Love Index scored an average of 53 out of 100, indicating widespread self-doubt. Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2002, are particularly affected, with 41% reporting low self-esteem.

Psychologist Lidia Martín argues that the current culture of self-esteem may not be effective. She suggests that true self-esteem comes from understanding and accepting oneself realistically, rather than simply 'embracing' oneself. Martín points out that low self-esteem often accompanies mental health issues, with the World Health Organisation reporting that one in seven young people aged 10-19 suffer from a mental disorder.

Social media influencers, celebrities, and advertising models are cited as major contributors to low self-esteem levels. The constant comparison and unrealistic beauty standards they promote can negatively impact individuals' self-worth. Countries with the highest self-esteem 'deficits' include South Korea, France, Saudi Arabia, China, and Spain, while Denmark, Australia, and the United States have the highest scores.

The Body Shop's report highlights that 60% of respondents would like to have more self-respect. To address this global issue, psychologists like Lidia Martín suggest a shift in perspective, focusing on realistic self-acceptance rather than just 'loving' oneself. As mental health awareness grows, understanding the root causes of low self-esteem becomes crucial for individuals and societies alike.
