German Minister Dorothee Bär labels Harvard's predicament as "highly dramatic"

German Federal Minister of State for digging into the recent situation at Harvard University, calling it "highly dramatic". Bär intends to address this issue and discuss potential expansion strategies in a meeting with her EU counterparts in Brussels on Friday. She aims to engage them in a European strategy to strengthen the nation's excellence in education and research.

Recent studies show a surge in inquiries from foreign academics and students to German universities. In Bär's opinion, this interest originates not just from the USA but also from countries like China and India, traditionally key destinations for academic pursuits.

The Administrative Agency of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the Trump administration barred Harvard University from accepting foreign students, taking away a privilege granted to the elite institution near Boston. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed their decision was due to Harvard's "refusal" to create a safe environment for Jewish students and the "racist" guidelines for diversity and inclusion.

Harvard has asserted that the government's move is "illegal" and sees it as a "retaliatory measure". The university emphasizes the crucial role international students and scholars play in its enrichment and contribution to the nation. With students and academics hailing from over 140 countries, Harvard significantly bolsters the university and the country's overall growth.

With the possibility of increased attention from foreign academia due to US visa restrictions, German universities may potentially profit from attracting more international talent. As a part of the German Excellence Strategy—a collaborative effort between the federal and state governments—Germany aims to enhance its standing as a leading hub for scientific research by investing in clusters of excellence and universities of excellence. While the Excellence Strategy uses a unique approach, the EU and US both offer various funding programs aimed at promoting research excellence and institutional growth.

  1. The Commission, in light of Dorothee Bär's emphasis on education and self-development, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to carcinogens in the context of this European strategy.
  2. Amidst war and conflicts and the current turbulence in global education due to visa restrictions in some countries, the EU, with its focus on policy and legislation, could explore innovative online education policies to attract more students from affected regions, contributing to general news regarding the inclusivity of online education.
  3. Engaging in politics and diplomacy, German Minister Dorothee Bär's efforts to strengthen the nation's excellence in education and research could lead to profound learning opportunities for students immersed in the latest developments in relations between universities and governmental agencies across the globe, as seen in the case of Harvard University.
  4. As part of their collaboration in the EU, Ministers will discuss the potential impact of war and conflicts on education-and-self-development, as well as investigate possible policy-and-legislation responses to address changing global dynamics, such as online-education opportunities for students affected by restrictions in other countries.
