Outstanding Teaching Qualities of Dr. Russell Gorga: He translates complex ideas into simple, graspable ones; he passionately champions holistic student education; and he displays untamed ardor for teaching and mentoring. These qualities led to him being accoladed as the Alumni Association's Outstanding Undergraduate Professor for 2017.

In the educational setting of Russell Gorga's classroom, diverse solutions are consistently deemed acceptable.

Dr. Russell Gorga of North Carolina State University's (NCSU) Wilson College of Textiles has been recognized for his exceptional teaching abilities, recently receiving the Alumni Association Distinguished Undergraduate Professor award for 2017. His peers and students praise his talent for simplifying complex concepts, commitment to holistic education, and boundless enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring.

This accolade comes after a series of teaching excellence awards, including the university-level Outstanding Teacher Award in 2016 and the Wilson College of Textiles' nomination for the same award in 2007. Gorga, an associate professor in the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science (TECS), was also one of six outstanding NCSU teachers selected to receive the Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher Award.

Dr. Jeffrey Joines, TECS department head, appreciates Gorga's ability to engage students effectively, fostering a classroom environment that encourages active learning and open discussion. Rachel Raineri, a Textile Engineering senior, also appreciates Gorga's approach, which has helped her understand the subject matter more deeply and encouraged her to explore learning as a process instead of merely focusing on grades.

Gorga's success in the classroom can be attributed to his adaptability. When he notices that students are struggling with a concept, he swiftly adjusts his teaching methods to meet their educational needs. This approach is evident in his Polymer Engineering classes and the Senior Design program, a year-long capstone program for the Textile Engineering and Textile Technology degree programs.

Outside the classroom, Gorga's commitment to his students extends to research mentorship. He has mentored over 35 undergraduate student researchers in his labs, and provided guidance to more than 40 master's and Ph.D. students, as well as high school students and visiting scholars. His fellow faculty members also seek his guidance on teaching innovations, positioning him as a go-to resource for undergraduate teaching matters.

Gorga's commitment to his craft is unwavering. He finds renewed energy when he enters the classroom, attributing this to the excitement of sharing his knowledge and inspiring future generations of textile professionals. His dedication to enhancing the learning experience extends beyond NCSU, as he was recently named a TH!NK Faculty Fellow, a program that enables him to collaborate with like-minded faculty members to improve the educational experience for students.
