Inadequate university space available in Omsk
In the Omsk region of Russia, a significant surge in university applications has been observed, leading to heightened competition and increased entrance scores. This trend is particularly noticeable in sought-after universities and programs, such as medicine and engineering.
At Omsk State Medical University, the number of applications has nearly doubled, with over 15,000 applications received, including 11,000 for budget places. This represents a nearly 50% increase from the previous year. The competition for admission is intense, especially in popular programs like MBBS, which attracts many international students, particularly from India.
Similarly, Omsk State University named after F.M. Dostoevsky received applications from 6080 applicants, with only 579 students admitted to budget places. The minimum scores for engineering programs at the university have risen significantly, from 144-150 to 170-180. It was particularly difficult to gain admission to engineering programs at the university.
The situation is similar at SibADI, where competition has increased, particularly for engineering and pedagogical specialties. The average EGE score at SibADI has increased by approximately 20%, and minimum entrance scores for these specialties have risen by the same amount.
Omsk State Agrarian University, on the other hand, has seen a different trend. The most popular specialties at the university are veterinary medicine, agrotechnology, zootechnology, agronomy, biotechnology, applied geodesy, and others. Top choices at the university include "Architecture", "Construction", "Transport and Technological Machines and Complexes", "Informatics and Computational Technology", "Automation of Technological Processes and Production", and "Ground Transport and Technological Means".
Meanwhile, Omsk State Technical University has filled all its budget places, accepting 1853 students. The university received over 24,000 applications this year, a 39% increase from last year. The average entrance score at the university increased by 22 points to 187.
The increase in applications to universities in the Omsk region is likely driving up admission competition and consequently raising entrance scores, as more candidates vie for limited seats. This trend aligns with the broader increase in foreign student enrollment within Russian higher education, which has been growing steadily as part of national development goals to boost international student numbers by 2030.
The Omsk region benefits from Russia's strategic initiatives to increase foreign student intake, seen in program expansions, scholarships, and international cooperation, which reinforces competitiveness in admissions overall. The main stage of university document submissions in the region has now concluded, with admission to universities continuing until the end of August, including enrollment in magistracy, aspirantura, and paid education.
