India Tops US Smartphone Market in Q2 2025 as Apple Expands Manufacturing
In Q2 2025, India emerged as the top producer of smartphones for the US market, a shift driven by Apple's manufacturing expansion and vendors' strategies to mitigate tariff risks. US smartphone shipments grew modestly, while China's share significantly decreased.
Apple started producing and assembling its Pro models of the iPhone 16 series in India, contributing to the country's rise as the leading manufacturing hub for US-bound smartphones. This move, along with vendors frontloading devices and maintaining high inventory levels, led India's share in US imports to surge from 13 per cent to 44 per cent in just a year.
Despite these efforts, the US market grew by a mere 1 per cent, indicating tepid demand. Samsung's shipments increased by 38 per cent year over year to 8.3 million units, while iPhone shipments declined by 11 per cent to 13.3 million units. Mid-to-small-sized vendors found the US market less attractive due to new requirements and uncertain tariff policies.
The shift in smartphone production to India has significant implications for the US market. While it may help mitigate tariff risks and diversify supply chains, the tepid demand growth suggests that vendors must address consumer preferences and market conditions more effectively.
