IT Survey 2025: Self-Education & Flexibility Rule, Remote Work Gains
A recent survey of over 1000 IT specialists across 12 regions, conducted in September 2025, has revealed interesting insights into the profession's educational paths and work preferences. The survey found that a significant majority of IT specialists, 57%, entered the field through self-education, while 51% acquired necessary skills after being hired.
The survey also explored the role of formal education in the IT industry. Only a third of Russian IT specialists have a degree in their field. This suggests that practical experience and self-education are often valued more than formal qualifications. Supporting this, four out of ten respondents believe that corporate internships can replace a degree.
Among younger professionals aged 18-24, two-thirds are already working or interning in their profession. This indicates a trend towards early integration into the workforce. In 2025, most IT professionals in Russia favoured applied sciences universities with a strong practical focus, reflecting the industry's emphasis on hands-on learning. However, it's notable that 55% of IT specialists do not work in their field of study, indicating a high level of flexibility and adaptability in the profession.
When it comes to work preferences, 62% of IT specialists choose their home region for cost savings, while 38% prefer remote work for companies based in the capital. Interestingly, 37% of IT specialists are ready to move to branches of large companies in the regions, suggesting a willingness to relocate for career advancement opportunities.
