Upon the report from the Saxony branch of the Labour Agency, approximately 10,000 apprenticeship positions remain unclaimed. Since October's onset of the training year, some 16,500 positions have been reported to local businesses in Saxony, with nearly 60% of them unoccupied.

Steffen Leonhardi, the deputy head of the regional office for the Federal Employment Agency in Saxony, commented that there is approximately one reported training position per registered apprentice in the region. The objective is to encourage undecided youth to explore these vacancies, as retail salesmen, salespeople, and mechatronics engineers are the most common training roles offered.

The issue of unfilled apprenticeships in Saxony is part of a nationwide trend where many vocational training positions go unfilled despite the high demand for skilled workers. Demographic change, educational choices, mismatches in skills and interests, and geographical and sectoral mismatches are contributing factors to this predicament.

To help alleviate this situation, the Federal Employment Agency's regional office in Saxony is actively working to connect potential apprentices and businesses. They offer career guidance and counseling, organize job fairs and outreach programs, collaborate with schools and companies, promote vocational training, and employ digital platforms and job matching tools.

By raising awareness of apprenticeship opportunities and bridging the gap between potential apprentices and companies, it is hoped that more young people will be prepared for these skilled career paths, and businesses will obtain the skilled workers they need. Despite ongoing challenges, such as persisting misconceptions and location or industry unattractiveness, the regional office remains dedicated to addressing these issues head-on.

  1. To encourage more young individuals to explore the unclaimed apprenticeship positions in Saxony, the Community policy by the Federal Employment Agency's regional office aims to enhance education-and-self-development and career-development opportunities through vocational training, skills-training, and job-search support.
  2. As part of the ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between potential apprentices and businesses, the regional office implements digital platforms and job matching tools, fostering collaboration with schools, companies, and organizing events like job fairs and outreach programs to promote vocational training and advanced skills-training in retail sales, salesperson, and mechatronics engineering roles.
