Building a Brighter Future with AI: Kazakhstan's Free Education Initiatives

Kazakhstan is making significant strides in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital skills by launching numerous free education initiatives. These programs, which cater to various age groups and professions, are part of a broader national plan to train one million citizens in AI by 2029.

One of the key initiatives is the TUMO center for creative technologies, set to open in Astana this October. The center will offer free education in 11 fields, including generative AI, robotics, and game development, aiming to train 5,000 students annually. With plans to expand to remote regions within five years, this center is a significant step towards addressing the IT talent shortage and fostering a digital economy.

Another notable program is the Tomorrow School, Kazakhstan's first AI school. This unique institution offers a two-year, no-teacher, project-based AI curriculum. Students complete over 50 projects and learn up to 20 programming languages, all while enjoying free tuition, a 24/7 campus, expert guest lectures, student clubs, and complimentary accommodation for regional students.

Since 2021, nearly 10,000 people have received free IT training through the Tech Orda program. With an 88% job placement rate among graduates, this initiative has proven to be a valuable resource for those seeking to enter the IT sector. Tech Orda collaborates with 72 private IT schools and offers courses in programming, big data, and cybersecurity.

In the realm of higher education, Satbayev University’s AI Sana program, supported by Huawei ICT Academy, has trained over 3,300 students in AI as of mid-2025. These efforts are integrated into Kazakhstan’s tech hub, Astana Hub, and broader regional AI cooperation initiatives.

The impact of these initiatives is evident. Graduate employment rates are high, AI literacy is increasing across demographics, and progress is being made towards overcoming IT talent shortages. As Kazakhstan positions itself as Central Asia’s leading digital and AI hub, it is also focusing on expanding infrastructure, launching AI agents, and creating regulatory frameworks to support sustainable AI development.

Moreover, the AI Qyzmet program, launched to improve the efficiency of public services, has already trained over 16,000 civil servants. The country's largest hackathon, Decentrathon 4.0, will be held this September with over 2,500 participants and cash prizes. Additionally, 30% of students at the TUMO center and other AI educational projects in Kazakhstan are women, demonstrating a commitment to gender equality in AI education.

Twelve winners of the AI Olymp, Kazakhstan's first national AI Olympiad for students in grades 9 to 12, have been invited to training camps to prepare for the International AI Olympiad in Beijing. The IT-Áiel project, in partnership with TechnoWomen, has trained 5,500 women from across Kazakhstan.

These initiatives, supported by government and private partnerships, are a testament to Kazakhstan's commitment to building a brighter future through AI and digital skills.

Technology plays a crucial role in Kazakhstan's educational initiatives, with the TUMO center for creative technologies offering free education in generative AI, robotics, and game development to train 5,000 students annually. On the other hand, Tomorrow School, an AI school, provides a two-year, no-teacher, project-based AI curriculum, aiming to equip students with up to 20 programming languages and digital skills, thereby contributing to the country's self-development and digital economy.
