The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has recently updated the syllabus for Class 12 History, providing students with a comprehensive study plan for the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year.

The new syllabus is structured around 32 lessons, divided into two main parts. It covers a wide range of topics, including Ancient India, Medieval India, Modern India, Indian National Movement and Contemporary India, Contemporary World, and either Evolution of State or Culture in India.

The syllabus is weighted as follows: Knowledge (26 marks, 26%), Understanding (52 marks, 52%), Application (22 marks, 22%). The question paper will have internal choice for 3 questions in each section. Moreover, it has an estimated distribution of difficulty levels: Difficulty (25 marks, 25%), Average (50 marks, 50%), and Easy (25 marks, 25%).

To assist students in their preparation, NIOS has made additional resources available. These resources primarily include detailed sample papers and comprehensive question paper designs. These materials reflect the examination style and types of questions expected, helping students understand the exam pattern, practice various question types, and strategize time management and answer presentation during exams.

The question paper design guide outlines the division of marks, providing students with a clear understanding of the weightage of each section. The sample papers, on the other hand, offer students a chance to test their knowledge and familiarise themselves with the question formats.

For visually impaired candidates, alternative questions will be provided in lieu of map-based questions.

Students planning to appear for the October 2025 examinations are encouraged to download the new syllabus without delay. The updated syllabus, along with the sample papers and question paper designs, is available for download on the NIOS website.

By utilising these supplementary materials, students can approach their studies in a multifaceted way, understanding both the complete curriculum and anticipating key exam areas. This, in turn, will help them prepare effectively for their exams and achieve academic success.
