The 2022 William Sutton Prize: Innovative Projects Addressing Community Challenges

This year, five groundbreaking projects have been shortlisted for the William Sutton Prize, a prestigious award founded by Clarion Housing Group and the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art in 2019. The prize, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, recognizes innovative ideas in housing and community development.

Among the shortlisted projects, two have caught the public's attention for their creative and impactful approaches to social and community wellbeing.

The AI-powered "super neighbour" project is an innovative initiative that uses artificial intelligence to strengthen neighbourly connections and support networks. By facilitating more effective resident engagement and assistance, this project aims to foster a stronger sense of community.

Another noteworthy project is the outdoor gym built from knives. This symbolic structure, located in Bromley, repurposes confiscated knives into a public fitness space. By promoting community cohesion and addressing issues of knife crime through positive, practical intervention, this project is making a significant impact on local areas.

Clarion Housing Group's chief executive, Clare Miller, emphasizes the importance of innovation in building sustainable and connected communities. She describes The William Sutton Prize as a means to unlock potential and support thinkers, doers, and dreamers shaping homes, places, and lives for generations.

The awards are divided into two categories: suitability and connected communities. The sustainability category offers a grant worth £50,000, while the connected communities category offers up to £25,000. Winners will be able to take home a share of the funding.

The ceremony for revealing the winner will take place in London on 25 September. This event will celebrate the innovative ideas and individuals that are shaping the future of housing and community development.

In addition to the shortlisted projects, Clarion Housing Group has empowered numerous individuals to turn their bold ideas into reality. Previous winners include Bell Philips Architects, Jas Bhalla Works, the Hackney School of Food, and Pride of Place Living.

Clare Miller encourages everyone to visit the William Sutton Prize website to learn more about the shortlisted projects and the positive impact they are having on communities across the UK.
