Beacon of Transformation: Revamping the Zekiwa Site in Zeitz, Saxony-Anhalt

Millions Earmarked for Rejuvenation of the Previously Abandoned Zekiwa Location - Massive Funding Earmarked for the Rebirth of the Previous Zekiwa Location

Let's dive into the deets: The once bustling pram manufacturer Zekiwa's production site in the heart of Zeitz is set for a major makeover, thanks to a hefty infusion of around 15.5 million euros. This revitalization project, announced by the NEB Network Office Saxony-Anhalt, falls under the state initiative "Saxony-Anhalt - Together for a New European Bauhaus (NEB)".

Ready for some insider intel? Here's the lowdown on the partnership: a fabulous crew of artistic minds and researchers, including the city of Zeitz, Anhalt University, Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Burg Giebichenstein Art University Halle, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and the Forum Rathenau, form the project consortium. The goal? Sustainable, circular, and climate-neutral construction, and a whole lot more!

Imagine a real-life laboratory (we call it a "real laboratory") where research and development happen in perfect harmony. Yep, that's what we're cooking up here! The focus is on envisioning future cohabitation while keeping the environment top-of-mind. Innovative designs, artistic flair, and aesthetics rule the roost at this test site-cum-workshop.

Remember, the "Reallabor Zekiwa Zeitz" is the biggest NEB project in Saxony-Anhalt and the only real laboratory. We aim to have the transformation wrapped up by the end of 2027. The works at the vacant Zekiwa site in Zeitz city center, deserted since the early '90s, will cover the former administrative building, the overgrown plot, and the ground floor in the main building of the sprawling, pram-producing behemoth of yore.

Say hello to the New European Bauhaus, EU's call to the people to brainstorm ideas for the future. Folks from all walks of life—citizens, urban planners, entrepreneurs, scientists, architects, and designers—are invited to submissions and collaboration. Multiple projects in the state are being backed by EU funds from the Just Transition Fund for the Central German region. The state uses the tip to develop concrete projects in the coal-rich Saxony-Anhalt region.

The Just Transition Fund has forwarded 44 million euros for the Saxony-Anhalt NEB initiative. The state kick-started the initiative in August 2023. The qualified ones are projects in the districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld, Mansfeld-Südharz, Saalekreis, Burgenlandkreis, and the city of Halle.
