Medical School Induction Ceremony Marks the Start of a New Voyage for Aspiring Physicians

The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry recently welcomed its newest class, the Class of 2027, with a special ceremony known as the Robert L. & Lillian H. Brent White Coat Ceremony. This event marks a significant milestone for the students, symbolising their official entry into the medical profession and their commitment to patient care and professionalism.

On Aug. 18, 105 students received their white coats, each one a symbol of their dedication to the medical field. The ceremony took place in the Larry and Cindy Bloch Alumni and Advancement Center.

Senior associate dean for Medical Student Education, David R. Lambert, M.D., and associate dean of Student Affairs, Flavia Nobay, M.D., were among the faculty members present at the ceremony. Mark B. Taubman, M.D., who is stepping down as Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, and CEO of the medical center, also addressed the class.

Taubman emphasised the importance of the biopsychosocial model in treating patients, a holistic approach that considers the biological, psychological, and social factors affecting a patient's health.

The keynote address was delivered by Joel Pasternack, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and a member of the SMD Class of 1980. Pasternack's speech inspired the new students, encouraging them to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in their medical journey.

Fourth-year medical student Malayna Hocker and classmate Bianca Duah shared their thoughts about their first three years as students. Hocker advised the Class of 2027 that they will make mistakes and struggle at times, but they can still be incredible healers.

The Class of 2027 is a diverse group, with students coming from 26 states and 15 of them born outside the U.S. The students speak 23 languages, including ASL. New York, Massachusetts, and California account for the top 3 spots in terms of student origin.

Photos and a video of the ceremony can be found on the University's Facebook, Instagram, and official website, allowing those who could not attend the event to share in the excitement and inspiration of this significant rite of passage. The Class of 2027's journey in medicine has officially begun, and with the support of their peers, faculty, and the medical community, they are well-prepared to face the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead.

Students at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, like the Class of 2027, are not only venturing into the medical profession but also embarking on a journey in health and wellness. This holistic approach, exemplified by the biopsychosocial model advocated by Dean Taubman, emphasizes the importance of education and self-development in understanding and treating medical-conditions.
