Music School Staff Recognized as Exceptional Scholars

Peter Kazaras and Ian Krouse, two renowned figures in the world of opera and music, have been promoted to the rank of Distinguished Professor at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. This prestigious title, UCLA's highest faculty rank, recognises outstanding professors who are pre-eminent authorities in their fields.

Peter Kazaras, a celebrated opera performer, director, and leader of young-artist programs, arrived at UCLA in 2007. He has since served as the chair of the department of music and as an academic associate dean. Kazaras is also the director of Opera UCLA and has directed for major professional companies, including the Washington National Opera, Seattle Opera, and the Los Angeles Opera.

Kazaras has been honoured with the inaugural Susan G. and Michel D. Covel MD Chair at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. To date, he has directed, supervised, or produced nearly 40 productions at UCLA.

Ian Krouse, a faculty member at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, is internationally recognised as a leading composer of classical guitar music. His works have been performed and recorded by major ensembles and soloists worldwide. In April 2015, Krouse's Armenian Requiem premiered and was later commercially recorded on the Naxos label.

Krouse's exceptional creativity, gifted teaching, and outstanding service have influenced generations of UCLA students and enriched the musical fields and broader culture. He has served as chair of the department of music and as an inaugural academic associate dean at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is honoured to count Krouse among its musical community and looks forward to his continued contributions and leadership. Krouse, like Kazaras, has been honoured with the Distinguished Professor rank at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

Vladimir Chernov, Juliana Gondek, and Ray Knapp are also current holders of the Distinguished Professor rank at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. The Distinguished Professor rank recognises faculty as outstanding teachers, mentors, and university citizens.
