UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Honours Distinguished Professors Peter Kazaras and Ian Krouse

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music has recognised the exceptional contributions of two of its faculty members, Peter Kazaras and Ian Krouse, by promoting them to the rank of Distinguished Professor. This prestigious honour is UCLA's highest faculty rank, given to a limited number of outstanding professors.

As a Distinguished Professor, Peter Kazaras continues his role as the Director of Opera UCLA and holds the Inaugural Susan G. and Michel D. Covel MD Chair. Kazaras, an internationally renowned operatic tenor, has graced the stages of some of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, and the Los Angeles Opera.

Before joining UCLA in 2007, Kazaras was the Artistic Director of the Seattle Opera Young Artists Program. Since his arrival, he has directed, supervised, or produced nearly 40 productions at UCLA, including innovative projects focused on operas by women composers and librettists.

Kazaras's repertoire includes lauded premieres of new works by preeminent American composers, such as Leonard Bernstein and John Corigliano. He is also an advisory board member for both the Glimmerglass Festival and the New York Festival of Song.

Ian Krouse, co-division chair and professor of composition at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, is internationally recognised as one of the leading composers of classical guitar music today. Krouse's works span nearly every genre and have been performed and recorded by major orchestras, choirs, wind ensembles, chamber groups, and soloists around the world.

Krouse's most notable work, the 100-minute Armenian Requiem for chorus, soloists, and orchestra, premiered to great acclaim in April 2015 and was commemorated in a commercial recording on the Naxos label.

While detailed information about Krouse's background, achievements, and current roles at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music was not readily available, the school is honoured to count him among its musical community.

The exceptional creativity, gifted teaching, and outstanding service of Professors Kazaras and Krouse have influenced generations of UCLA students and enriched their musical fields as well as our broader culture. We look forward to the continued contributions and leadership of these distinguished professors.
