At the Bezos Earth Fund, Dr. Margie Warrell delivers insights from her latest book, The Courage Gap, to Jess Sibley, the CEO of Time magazine.

Last week, I was invited to speak at the Bezos Earth Fund, discussing how the principals from my new book, "The Courage Gap," can help drive change in a time of disruption, complexity, and uncertainty. I had a fascinating conversation with Jessica Sibley, CEO of TIME Magazine, where we explored ways to step up, individually and collectively, to face our greatest challenges, including creating a more sustainable future. Nicole Iseppi, Director of Global Energy Innovation at Bezos Earth Fund, started the event by emphasizing the importance of courage in their commitment to supporting innovative strategies for impactful solutions.

Jess began our discussion with a quote from "The Courage Gap":

“The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve the problems of the world.” — Mahatma Gandhi

This gap between knowledge and action can lead to potential being lost and change stalling. The main driver of this gap? Fear. Fear of making a wrong move, losing status, or disrupting the status quo. Overcoming this fear requires courage.

We live in a time of immense uncertainty - socially, politically, economically, and environmentally. As leaders, it's tempting to seek absolute certainty in a world full of uncertainty. But effective leadership requires a different approach.

Strength doesn't come from acting with blind conviction or retreating into inaction. Instead, the strongest leaders navigate between certainty and uncertainty. They maintain a sense of purpose, anchoring themselves to their core values and guiding vision while staying flexible in their approach. They're open to new realities, willing to challenge assumptions, and able to change course when needed.

So how can we lead in this tension? In our conversation, I discussed three principles for leading with greater courage in the space between certainty and uncertainty.

  1. Anchor in Purpose, Adapt in Action:Deciding on a purpose provides direction even when the path ahead is unclear. Leaders anchored in their purpose can remain flexible in their strategies, effectively adjusting their course without losing sight of what truly matters.
  2. Challenge Your Certainties:While it's easy to believe in absolute certainty, our brains filter reality through cognitive biases that shape our beliefs and reinforce our rightness. True leadership demands a willingness to question our assumptions and seek diverse perspectives.
  3. Don't Wait for Clarity to Act:Waiting for certainty before moving forward is often a greater risk than acting in uncertainty. Those who learn fast, experiment, adapt, and iterate are best positioned to seize opportunities hidden beyond the horizon.

Navigating between certainty and uncertainty requires both conviction and curiosity. It's about maintaining a strong sense of purpose while remaining open to the possibilities within uncertainty.

What serves as your guiding principle, according to Margie Warrell at Bezos Earth Fund?

At a time when many people feel overwhelmed by the challenges before us, it's essential to remember that the future will not be shaped by those seeking perfect clarity or clinging to old answers. It will be shaped by those who question their best answers, act boldly, and create space for others to do the same.
