Indecision got you tangled up? Two experts lay out the essential tools to help you conquer those tricky life decisions.
Some decisions can send us into a spin: Should I leave my relationship? Change jobs? Move halfway across the country? You know, the ones that can seriously shake up your life. We all make a ton of decisions every day, but some require thought and introspection—especially those that carry a bit of risk or consequence.
Often, we go through life on autopilot, sticking to routines. Wake up, shower, have breakfast. Decisions like these aren't much of a brainer. But there are those life-changing choices that leave us questioning ourselves.
So, why feel scared of certain decisions?
According to Prof. Florian Artinger, CEO of Berlin-based Simply Rational, it's the consequences of the decisions that stir up the fear, not the decision itself. He uses the example of deciding to move for a job change, which means leaving a stable job for a new one with an unfamiliar employer. Questions like "Will I fit in?", "What about my partner and kids?" and "Is it worth giving up everything I have here?" often come to mind.
Dorothee Ellerbrake, a systemic family counselor from Düsseldorf, agrees, stating that it's these potential outcomes that bring on the anxiety.
What's the remedy then?
One handy tool for this situation? The classic pro and con list. Florian Artinger suggests making one to help clarify all the factors at play. But keep in mind, it's not just about facts. Writing down your emotions can provide valuable insight as well. Joy at the prospect of an exciting new job, but also guilt over leaving loved ones behind.
Intuition can also guide you. However, it takes time to sharpen that intuitive instinct, so take your time. Even a short break from your daily routine and some introspection can help bring your gut feelings to the forefront. Just remember to balance those emotions with logic.
Picturing the future scenario in vivid detail—both for staying put and moving on—can shed light on potential outcomes.
What viewpoint matters most?
Valuing outside perspectives can be invaluable when making significant decisions. Friends and family often offer advice, but sometimes their opinions may be biased.
For example, if a husband confesses to an affair, his wife's friends might urge her to divorce him, but a neutral third party might suggest giving the relationship another try if it's otherwise strong.
And can poor choices be avoided altogether? Artinger says not entirely. Taking risks is an inevitable part of life.

Combined Approach
Combining these approaches makes for a strong decision-making process. Intuition allows for quick judgment and creative thinking, while pro-con lists promote logical analysis and help reduce emotional bias. Imagining future scenarios aids in anticipating potential outcomes and can reveal hidden risks or benefits. By integrating these tools, you can make well-rounded decisions that account for both rational and emotional factors.
