New York City's Bronx Science School Welcomes Social Studies Educator, Ms. Davis, Part of the Fresh wave of Educators
New Educator at Bronx Science Brings Passion for History and Empathy to Classroom
Ms. Sabrina Davis, a native of Charlotte, Vermont, has joined the faculty at the Bronx High School of Science as a member of the Social Studies Department. She began her teaching career during the COVID-19 pandemic and has quickly made a name for herself with her innovative teaching methods and dedication to her students.
Ms. Davis, who attended Adelphi University in New York and pursued a five-year dual degree program, joined the school in September of 2021. She is teaching Global History 1 and 2 to ninth graders and sophomores.
One of Ms. Davis's key philosophies is the importance of incorporating current events into her teaching of history. She believes that social studies is one of the best subjects to discuss empathy, and she strives to make history relatable to students by connecting topics to their personal interests. For example, she has been known to use the popular Hunger Games movies as a teaching aid.
Assistant Principal of the Social Studies Department, Mr. Colchamiro, has given a name to Ms. Davis's SGI, "the Learning Lounge." This space is designed to foster a collaborative and engaging learning environment for students.
Ms. Davis aims to embody the ideology of one-to-one teaching, striving to impact each of her students individually. She finds it difficult to adjust to the large number of students at Bronx Science compared to her previous school, but she is committed to providing a personalised education for every student.
Despite the challenges of teaching during the pandemic, Ms. Davis has found ways to adapt. She has faced difficulties with socially distanced and masked students, but she has persevered in her mission to make history relevant and exciting for all students, one lesson at a time.
In addition to her teaching duties, Ms. Davis is also the advisor for the K-pop club and helps oversee the Lunar Productions Club, which focuses on Asian-based performances. She is also a member of the school's Diversity Hiring Inclusion Committee (DHIC), where she works to make a difference in the Bronx Science community and help in the hiring of teachers.
Ms. Davis's passion for education is evident in everything she does, and she is already making a positive impact on the Bronx High School of Science community. As she continues to grow and adapt in her new role, there is no doubt that she will continue to inspire and educate her students for years to come.
