Nizhny Novgorod Region Boosts Water Transport: Passenger Surge, New Port, Electric Boats
A significant boost to water transport is underway in the Nizhny Novgorod region. A private-public initiative is constructing a cargo port in Bor, while passenger traffic on high-speed boats has surged. The region's university is at the forefront of these developments, training personnel and implementing modern technologies.
The region's assembly and the Volga State University of Water Transport have joined forces to make river transport more affordable and accessible. This initiative comes as passenger numbers have soared, from 2,000 in 2000 to a staggering 115,000 this year. Over 4,000 trips have been made on 45 routes, both regional and interregional.
The university plays a pivotal role in these advancements. It develops virtual simulators for training ship pilots and high-speed fleet drivers. The institution also trains a quarter of all personnel for Russia's water transport industry. In recent years, it has collaborated with the regional assembly to train ship engineers and captains, implement digital technologies, and improve river navigation in the Volga region. High-speed water transport routes have expanded to multiple regions, including Kazan, Ulyanovsk, Kostroma, Yaroslavl, Perm, and Samara.
Next year, electric boats will be introduced to connect riverbanks during the navigation season. This year, interregional transportation reached Volgograd for the first time, with high passenger interest.
The Nizhny Novgorod region is transforming its water transport sector. With increased passenger numbers, expanded routes, and the introduction of electric boats, this mode of transport is becoming more accessible, environmentally friendly, and efficient. The region's university is instrumental in driving these changes, training personnel and implementing modern technologies.
