Shooting at University of New Mexico: Suspect in Custody

In a shocking turn of events, a shooting incident occurred at the University of New Mexico (UNM) during school orientation on July 25, 2025. The suspect, 18-year-old John Fuentes, was apprehended by New Mexico State Police hours after the incident.

The incident took place inside a dorm room at the Casas del Rio housing complex on the UNM main campus. Four individuals, including Fuentes, a 14-year-old boy who was killed, and a 19-year-old who was injured, were playing video games when the shooting occurred. Reports suggest that Fuentes was allegedly under the influence of drugs before the shooting, and fired shots in the dorm room. The others managed to escape after the gunfire.

Following the incident, the University of New Mexico was placed on lockdown, and students were instructed to shelter in place. Officials ensured that all students involved in the orientation were safely off campus. The New Mexico State Police, along with multiple law enforcement agencies, were at the scene, and a manhunt ensued for Fuentes. He was eventually located and arrested without bond, charged with first-degree murder and other offenses.

The University of New Mexico, with approximately 23,000 students during the school year, had been hosting weekly scheduled orientations ahead of the fall semester. New students like Mikey Beck were visiting the campus when they heard gunshots overnight at the student housing complex. Mikey witnessed an injured person hiding in bushes and saw two people jumping out of a dorm window and running. The other individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

University President Garnett S. Stokes issued a letter to the school community expressing sadness over the loss of life and horror at the act of violence. The identities of the individuals involved in the shooting have not been released. The New Mexico State Police are actively investigating the incident.

The shooting occurred at Casas del Rio (Gila), located at 420 Redondo Dr NE in Albuquerque. The Associated Press contributed to the report. No suspect remains at large following the shooting; John Fuentes has been taken into custody. Our thoughts are with the affected community during this difficult time.

In the aftermath of the tragedy at the University of New Mexico, discussions on education-and-self-development and society may focus on the impact of such incidents on student communities and the necessity of promoting a culture of peace and respect (education-and-self-development). Meanwhile, General News outlets continue to report on the commotion, providing updates on the ongoing investigation into the shooting at Casas del Rio housing complex, including the arrest of the suspect, John Fuentes, charged with first-degree murder and other offenses, and the criminal proceedings that follow under the jurisdiction of Crime-and-Justice.
