In Portugal, the application process for university admission for the academic year 2025-2026 has commenced. The national higher education entrance exam (ENES) applications open on July 21, 2025.

Students have until August 4, 2025, to submit their applications for the first phase. For emigrant candidates, Portuguese descendants, or those requesting to replace their entrance exams with foreign exams, the application deadline is earlier, on July 28, 2025.

To apply, students must visit the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES) website and request an access password for their application. The ENES form, containing final secondary school grade and entrance exam results, is also required.

This year, students will have over 1,100 options to choose from at 34 higher education institutions. Universities and polytechnic institutes have made a total of 55,956 spots available through the general access system. This is 643 more spots than were available last year.

The general access system includes the national exam and local exams, such as those for arts programs. The results will be announced on August 24, 2025, and candidates selected in the first phase have until August 28, 2025, to enroll.

Last year, 58,641 students registered for the first phase of the national entrance exam, 723 fewer than the previous year. This year, the DGES received 10,183 applications for the first phase, which is 1,859 fewer than last year.
