Greater Kansas City Peacebuilding Conference Kicks Off

The Greater Kansas City Peacebuilding Conference, themed "Peacebuilding: Healing Our Polarized Societies", is set to commence on September 16, 2021. This event, co-hosted by Park University and Johnson County (Kan.) Community College, will take place at St. Mark Hope and Peace Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Mo. (3800 Troost Ave.).

The conference will offer a mix of in-person and virtual discussions, providing an opportunity for a wide range of participants to engage. Admission to all events is free.

On the opening day, the conference will start at 1 p.m. with Mará Rose Williams, higher education reporter at The Kansas City Star, presenting a discussion on "Media as a Tool to Heal Polarized Societies". Williams will also discuss The Kansas City Star's award-winning project, "Truth in Black and White".

Later in the day, at 6 p.m., Rev. Donna Simon, D.Min., will present "Healing Polarized Societies Through Equitable Pay", exploring the concept of a "living wage" and its potential to lift working families out of poverty.

On October 6, starting at noon, Mará Rose Williams will revisit her topic, this time available both in-person and virtually. The presentation will review the pillars of positive peace and how they can be assessed and leveraged to address polarization in society.

The conference will conclude on Wednesday, Oct. 27. In addition to the aforementioned speakers, Michael Collins, executive director of The Americas at the Institute for Economics and Peace, will deliver a virtual presentation on "Positive Peace: Empowering the Peacebuilder We Each Have Within".
