In the heart of Adjumani, Northern Uganda, a 30-year-old South Sudanese refugee named Akoy is making a significant impact as a teacher at Ayilo 2A Elementary School [1][2]. With more than 200,000 South Sudanese refugees residing in the district, the school plays a crucial role in providing education to the community's children.
Akoy, who hails from the South Sudanese state of Jonglei, shares a common language with many of the children at the school. He began teaching immediately upon arrival, even in the makeshift 'school under the tree.' Today, he teaches mathematics, English, and general studies in the school's well-equipped classrooms, which were funded by Welthungerhilfe in cooperation with the Höller Stiftung [1].
The school's infrastructure also includes comfortable teachers' residences, ensuring teaching can continue even during rainy weather. Akoy and his family, along with other refugee families, reside in small, round huts within the settlement, while teachers from out of town live in small houses behind the school.
Akoy's dedication to his work is evident. Despite the large classes—with 150 children per classroom—he demonstrates strength and pride, passing hope on to the children. The children, in turn, are grateful for Akoy's efforts in helping them regain a sense of normality.
The Ugandan government's approach to refugees is unique. Rather than housing them in camps, refugees are settled quickly, allowing for integration into local communities. Every refugee who arrives may stay in Uganda, contributing to the growth and diversity of the region.
Akoy's journey started two years ago when he fled from South Sudan and arrived at the Ugandan border in June 2014. He was greeted with immediate aid, receiving water and food upon his arrival. Today, he expresses gratitude for Germany's potential support in providing more room for the teachers at the school.
