Public Discourse in the Open Plaza
In the heart of Kazakhstan, the nationwide environmental movement "Taza Qazaqstan" joined forces with the environmental youth organisation "Jasyl El" to celebrate the anniversary of the great poet, Abay, in Abay Square.
The event, which was part of the "Taza Qazaqstan" initiative, saw volunteers from "Jasyl El" tidying up the area to prepare it for the celebrations. The guest of honour at the event emphasised the importance of not just focusing on ecology, but also on the purity of every Kazakhstani's soul. They believed that Abay's thoughts and "Words of Admonition" were about soul purity and the desire to see the results of honest labour.
During the event, participants discussed key milestones in Abay's life and work. The guest noted that their task now is to convey Abay's work to the youth in their native language. This emphasis on language was echoed by Eraly Baykhozha, a participant in the "Jasyl El" project, who found the event very useful. He believed that regularly holding such events throughout the city would have a positive impact on the youth.
The event concluded with participants forming the phrase "ABAI180" in tribute to the poet. Young people also had the opportunity to meet Dr. Dihan Kamzabekuly, the general director of "Qazaq Gazetleri".
Abay Square, a central cultural landmark, has been used by "Jasyl El" activists as a platform for socially and environmentally significant events. The significance of linking "Taza Qazaqstan," Abay Square, and "Jasyl El" activities during the anniversary celebrations of Abay lies in promoting environmental awareness alongside cultural heritage.
This merging of ecological activism with cultural commemoration strengthens the national identity around both environmental stewardship and Kazakh literary-historical legacy. It aligns with the government’s emphasis on making "Taza Kazakhstan" part of everyday life and youth engagement in environmental protection.
