Rabbi Natan Levy Assumes Role as Campus Rabbi for Syracuse Hillel and Jewish Chaplain at Hendricks Chapel

Rabbi Natan Levy has been appointed as the campus rabbi at Syracuse University's Hillel and Jewish chaplain at Hendricks Chapel. This esteemed religious leader brings a wealth of experience and accomplishments to his new role.

Before his current appointment, Rabbi Levy served as the head of operations for the Faiths Forum for London and a senior lecturer at Leo Baeck College in the United Kingdom. His background includes academic and leadership roles within Jewish educational and interfaith institutions. He has also been involved with Chabad communities in the UK, holding relevant qualifications such as an MA in Jewish Studies.

Rabbi Levy's work at Syracuse University centers on supporting religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical life among students, consistent with Hendricks Chapel’s mission as an inclusive spiritual hub on campus. Jillian Juni, executive director of Syracuse Hillel, is thrilled to welcome Rabbi Levy as their new campus rabbi.

Rabbi Levy has a B.A. in religious studies from Pomona College in California and holds a Ph.D. in environmental theology from the University of Bristol. He also has an M.A. in Jewish studies from King's College. His academic achievements are complemented by his extensive global interfaith experience.

In the past, Rabbi Levy has served as head of the London School of Jewish Studies Responsibility Unit, rabbi of the Shenley United Jewish Community, and head of interfaith outreach at the Board of Deputies of British Jews. He has also been awarded a Gingko Interfaith Fellowship, KAICIID Interreligious Dialogue Fellowship, McCaul Scholarship, Hass/Koshland Memorial Award, and JNF Scholarship for Environmental Activities.

Rabbi Levy is excited about serving alongside chaplains of many faiths, building bridges and creating programs that broaden perspectives and help in growth, even in disagreement. He is looking forward to engaging with students and participating in thoughtful conversations at Hendricks Chapel and Syracuse Hillel. The Rev. Brian Konkol, vice president and dean of Hendricks Chapel, is excited about the partnership between Hendricks Chapel and Syracuse Hillel.

Rabbi Levy has published "Genesis 1-11, the Rise of Agriculture and the Earliest States" and co-authored "Sharing Eden: Green Teachings from Jews, Christians and Muslims." He is expected to strengthen Syracuse Hillel's offerings, supporting efforts in building robust Jewish life, deepening community partnerships, and strengthening interfaith work.

It is important to note that there is a separate individual named Natan Levy who is an MMA fighter and coach, holding black belts in Karate and Kung Fu, and recognized as a USDC 2-time Champion in Striking for MMA tutorials. However, this athletic profile is distinct from Rabbi Natan Levy’s religious and academic roles.

In summary, Rabbi Natan Levy’s key roles and achievements include:

  • Campus Rabbi at Syracuse University Hillel
  • Jewish Chaplain at Hendricks Chapel, Syracuse University
  • Former Head of Operations, Faiths Forum for London
  • Senior Lecturer at Leo Baeck College, UK
  • Academic qualifications including an MA in Jewish Studies
  • Leadership and educational contributions to Jewish and interfaith communities.

Rabbi Levy's work at Syracuse University, as both campus rabbi and Jewish chaplain, aims to facilitate personal growth and education-and-self-development among students by supporting religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical life. As a scholar with multiple academic degrees, he is anticipated to strengthen the educational offerings at Syracuse Hillel, contributing to deepening community partnerships and interfaith work.
