Recognizing the Dedication of Part-Time Professors: The Devotion of Dr. Edward Sommers
In the world of orthodontics, few names resonate as profoundly as that of Dr. Edward Sommers. A distinguished figure in the field, Dr. Sommers has spent his career honing his skills, conducting groundbreaking research, and fostering a sense of community among his peers.
Dr. Sommers' journey began at the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated with a DMD in 1978. After completing his tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force Dental Corp, he returned to academia, this time at the prestigious Eastman Dental Hospital in Rochester, New York. In 1981, he joined the faculty as a part-time lecturer, a position that would eventually evolve into a full-time role.
One of Dr. Sommers' most significant accomplishments came in 2019, when his cephalometric research was published in a prestigious journal. Despite not considering himself a strong researcher, this publication was a particularly exciting accomplishment for him. The material of his research has contributed significantly to the field, further cementing his reputation as a leading figure in orthodontics.
Dr. Sommers finds teaching fulfilling due to the interactions with residents and the hands-on experience he gets with them chairside. His teaching style at Eastman is characterised by a preference for more hands-on training for residents. This approach has no doubt played a role in the close-knit community that has developed within the Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics department at Eastman.
The department's alumni are known for their mutual respect and camaraderie, a result of their shared experiences and the meaningful nature of their shared training. Six residents in a class at Eastman become close over a two-year period and maintain a close relationship after graduation. This tight-knit community is a testament to the department's unique educational style and shared philosophy.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sommers has lectured around the world, sharing his knowledge and insights with fellow professionals. He advises today's orthodontist in training to consider entering an association practice if they do not wish to start their own, as this allows for the acquisition of skills in both orthodontics and the business aspect of managing a practice.
Dr. Sommers has received numerous accolades for his teaching, including the EIOH Excellence in Teaching Award and a Continuing Dental Education Achievement Award from the New York State Dental Association. His contributions to the field of orthodontics, both in research and education, are undeniable.
Despite his many accomplishments, Dr. Sommers does not have advice for his younger self. He does not think he would change anything about his journey. Instead, he continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of orthodontists, carrying on the tradition of camaraderie and excellence within the Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics department at Eastman.
