Reconsidering Your Research Pursuit: Questions to Contemplate Before Abandoning Your Research Venture

In the realm of laboratory research, a common misconception is that it is a lonely profession. However, as a summer research intern, I've learned from my mentor that this couldn't be further from the truth. Laboratory research is, in fact, a very social endeavour.

My summer research internship in molecular biology was not without its challenges. I experienced a frustrating setback when I accidentally used the wrong reagent, causing an experiment to fail. But these setbacks, I've come to realise, are part of the learning process.

To make the most of your summer research internship experience, it's essential to understand your supervisor's motivations and expectations. This understanding helps you comprehend what is valued in the internship, such as quality of work or learning outcomes. By tailoring your efforts accordingly, you can feel a sense of purpose and align your academic or career goals with the project’s objectives.

Moreover, knowing the background of the research project allows you to see the bigger picture and relevance of your tasks. This contextual insight helps connect classroom knowledge to real-world applications, which is a core benefit of experiential learning in internships. It also allows you to identify aspects you are passionate about, increasing your personal investment in the project.

Open communication with your supervisor, including asking for and receiving feedback, is crucial. It builds relationships that help you see yourself as a valued team member who contributes to collective goals, further increasing motivation and connection.

It's important to remember that the summer research internship should not be just a means to an end. It should be an end in and of itself, offering meaningful professional and academic growth. If you find yourself unsure about pursuing research, take the time to reflect on your experience and consider other professions.

My mentor's work involves developing a new CRISPR/Cas9 delivery system for the treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This project serves as a reminder that the research you conduct can have a significant impact on people's lives. To develop a personal connection to your work, I suggest understanding the motivations and background of the research. This understanding can foster motivation through active engagement and feedback.

Lastly, don't be afraid to propose your own experiments and question the purpose of the research if needed. This proactive approach shows your supervisor that you are invested in the project and are eager to contribute meaningfully.
